The recently appointed state leader was asked why law enforcement is not taking the suspect back instead.
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins flew to California Thursday to personally extradite a deadly crash suspect back to Florida.
“We are done with that (expletive),” Collins said.
The lieutenant governor criticized California’s immigration policies along with California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Collins said the state’s leader is not doing enough to battle illegal immigration.
“This is not business as usual. This isn’t politics as usual,” Collins said.
Collins was alongside law enforcement to escort Indian migrant Harjinder Singh back to Florida to face three counts of vehicular homicide. This follows a crash involving his semi-truck last week that left three South Floridians in a van dead in St Lucie County.
Collins also said Singh obtained a commercial driver’s license from California.
“We’re here in California because when this tragic accident happened and three Floridian lives were lost, he fled back to California,” Collins said.
The recently appointed state leader was asked why law enforcement is not taking the suspect back instead.
“Leadership is getting on the ground and saying the hard things. This is not our home turf,” Collins responded.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Singh used an official use only area to make an illegal U-turn on the turnpike last week when he crossed in front of a minivan. Collins said, back in 2018, Singh crossed the southern border illegally and then went to California. That left the lieutenant governor seeking answers.
“Why was he driving in the first place? He didn’t have basic English proficiency. He didn’t know the road signs and yet he is driving a giant vehicle across our state,” Collins said.
State Rep. Alex Andrade, a Republican in the Panhandle, questioned why Collins was able to put his hands on a detainee when he’s not a sworn law enforcement officer. He called it a political stunt.
A spokesperson with the Florida Democratic Party sent the following statement:
“This is just another expensive political stunt from the DeSantis administration on the tax payers dime. While LG Collins is flying across the country for political theater in empty parking lots, Florida Dems are working hard to ensure Floridians can navigate this affordability crisis and keep their hard earned money in their pockets. If the LG is so concerned about crime, he should look at solving it in his own party.”
